Taichung Arena

Year: 2021-2022

Location: Taichung, Taiwan

My Position : Curtain Wall Consultant

My Work : 3D Modeling & Simulation & Analysis

Taichung arena is designed by Kengo Kuma, we were commissioned by the architects as facade consultants in this project. The significant feature of Taichung Arena is the dynamic louvers wrapped around the facade. My main job is to optimize the sophisticated louver and classify them into ten types so as to be efficient and cost-effective in the construction. Moreover, we encounter many difficulties when the louvers intervene with ramps, doors, windows and floor slabs, so we have to come up with different construction methods to apply various situations. For example, sometimes the louver is cantilevered and we need different structures and components to support them. In the end, we convert the 3D model to 2D manufacturing drawings and label coordination of each louver.

Taichung Arena is the largest building scale I have ever done. Therefore, computer-aided tools are important to us, so we can work more efficiently and precisely. To be more specific, I parameterize the 3D model of the louvers in Grasshopper, so I can change the variables and adjust the design immediately depending on the need of architects. As a result, we can improve the quality of the building and accomplish our work in an efficient way.
